Netflix is easily the leader in online DVD rental services. With about 35 shipping centers across the United States Netflix offers the fastest ship times around, giving its customers more movies for less money. Using the most popular Netflix $16.99 plan (unlimited rentals, three movies at a time), we were able to rent and watch 25 separate movie titles during a single month, an average of only $.67 a movie. Whereas some services end up charging up to $1.55 a movie on similar plans.

Although Blockbuster, our #2 winner provides a little more detailed movie information, Netflix offers 85,000 moviesmore than any other DVD rental site.

Netflix has a massive movie selection topping 85,000 individual titles; these are separated into 21 different genres including new releases, indies and television. However, you may only sign up for Netflix if you are 18 or older, as the service does offer a few adult genres. NetFlix also rents high definition HD and Blue Ray discs.

One of many fine features offered through Netflix is the level of helpful movie data they offer. For example, when you search for an actor or a director, the site provides you with a photo, a brief bio and career information. There's also a list of all the movies that person has been involved with available for rent through Netflix. You can rate each movie you rent and read reviews written by other customers and professional movie critics. We also had an experience with Netflix where we received a broken DVD in the mail. Upon notifying them, Netflix representatives immediately sent us a replacement movie and followed up with an impressive number of emails to make sure we were completely taken care of; we felt this level of service was extraordinary. Netfilx now offers a small collection of titles to download. Most are older titles. The number of hours allotted to you depends on which Netflix plan you are on. Downloads are not calculated by title, but by hours. Therefore, if you decide to watch special features, you will be eating into your allotted time

With approximately 35 shipping centers throughout the US and more planned to come, Netflix offers shorter shipping times than any other online DVD rental service taking an average of around a day to reach you once they've shipped out. These shorter shipping times allow you to get more bang for your buck, giving you the ability to rent more DVDs within a shorter time period

Movie browsers don't have to click back and forth to find out information about a particular movie. A mouseover across a movie image will bring up a temporary text box with the synopsis, main actors, director, genre and rating. Clicking on the movie title provides the same information plus awards and an explanation for the movie's rating. Although NetFlix doesn't provide as detailed information as Blockbuster, it is enough to make choosing movies quick and easy.

Netflix outshines the competition with an immense DVD selection, superior customer service and the fastest arrival time around. So if you're looking for an online DVD rental service that can meet all of your DVD rental needs, try the Netflix free trial and see what a real DVD service is like.

Blockbuster

Our 2nd ranked product Blockbuster Online offers several search options to help you find the DVD or video game you're looking for. Some exceptional features with this service include movie critic reviews, 75,000 movie titles and after a free trial membership for the most popular $16.99 plan, the first month is only $9.99. Blockbuster Online boasts one of the largest rental movie collections around. But fewer movies kept Blockbuster Online from beating out Netflix for our #1 spot.

Blockbuster Online trails Netflix in the amount of movies offered; however they still have a whopping 80,000 separate titles. These are divided into 17 different genres and various additional categories. And depending on your chosen plan, you can exchange your mailed movies at any Blockbuster store.

Some of features we liked about this service include the ability to view critic reviews, view trailers and, if you enjoy a movie, the convenient option to purchase it directly from the site. Additionally, like most DVD rental services there are no late fees, due dates and postage is included with your membership. Blockbuster Online also gives you the option to try their service for free.

The average amount of time it takes to rent a movie from Blockbuster Online and receive it in the mail is one to two days. Sometimes your turn over time is fastest if you use in-store exchange. Dropping a movie off at the store enables Blockbuster to check your DVD back into the system that much faster.

Blockbuster Online has an impressive amount of information about each movie such as a full synopsis, cast of characters, rating, writers, director, studio, genre and awards. You can also watch movie trailers.

Blockbuster Online allows you to search DVDs by title, actor, director, by new releases and by MPAA film rating. You can also search for movies with other categories including women in film and award winner.

Blockbuster Online is one of the best online DVD rental services around, offering a wide selection of movies online and in the store. If you're a movie enthusiast or are looking for an online movie rental service that allows you to exchange movies in the store or in the mail then Blockbuster Online is the service for you.

Rent DVDs by Mail, As Low As $9.95 / Month

GreenCine is a niche DVD rental service which focuses very well on more obscure and highbrow genres. In their own words, the focus on "indie, arthouse, anime, foreign, classics, documentaries, and other esoteric fare." Nonetheless, they do stock mainstream Hollywood blockbusters as well, but won't have the depth of copies for new releases as a Netflix or Blockbuster. But they really do shine on their niche offerings, with all sorts of anime and foreign films you simply won't find at the mainstream sites.

They list a whopping 38 genres (including good ones like Criterion Editions, Cult, Film Noir, etc), and many of these have subgenres (for instance, Fantasy has Classic Fantasy, Fairy Tales & Myths, Lost Worlds, and Swords & Sorcery). There are a total of 250 genres and subgenres, making browsing so much easier. And as you'd expect, to help with your search, they have an excellent Advanced Search option on title, studio, cast, director, other cast/crew, MPAA rating, genre, era, language, subtitle, and media type; pretty impressive.

They also have community features like polls, blog, forum, GreenCine on Myspace, Facebook, recent favorite lists by members, etc. They also have interviews with influential filmakers, breaking news on film, and information about film festivals.

We particularly like that GreenCine shows the availability of titles in your queue and when you're likely to receive them, in a five-level scale from green to red. They also ship on Saturdays. As of October 2007, they also introduced a Quick Return function to speed up deliveries. Just notify GreenCine when you've popped your discs back in the mail, and they'll mail your next discs immediately, without waiting to receive your last lot. This helps them to achieve their goal of 1-2 working day maximum shipping.

Unlike most DVD rental companies, they send their DVDs out with a cardboard backing, which should reduce the prospects for damage in transit. Unlike many companies, they don't appear to throttle back high volume renters.

In addition to online dvd rentals, GreenCine also sell DVDs and offer limited Video On Demand (VOD) services. This is a downloadable, near DVD-quality file, usually $4.99 for a 10 day download (30 days for adult films).

As for customer service, as you might expect, they have a loyal niche follower, with broadly positive comments about them on the net and blogosphere. They have a strong sense of community, and with a bunch of cinephiles, their customer reviews are worth reading on their own. That said, even defenders of the service note that mailings often take a day long than Netflix, if not more for some areas outside the West Coast.

DVD Avenue

DVD Avenue, offers 25,000 movie titles that are organized within 27 different categories including Anime, PS2, Cult, Gay and Lesbian and Adult. Although no subcategories are available, there is a feature that lists all products in alphabetical order.

DVD Avenue offers 25,000 movie titles that are organized within 27 different categories. You can browse by genre, titles in alphabetical order, actor, director, year or language. They also include some fun movie lists that have a variety of selections.

We found DVD Avenue easy to navigate and to be a user friendly site. You can search by title, actor, director or synopsis. There are no late fees, due dates and free postage. We felt a few features that could be added to this service include; critic reviews, movie previews, and a free-trial membership, so that those interested can test the service before they buy.

The average time it takes to receive a DVD rental from DVD Avenue is two to five days, unless you live in the D.C. Metro Area, then it will take one to three days. Compared to the delivery times of other online DVD rental services, we feel this is a little long to be considered convenient.

DVD Avenue provides the movie cover image, synopsis, actors, director, rating, genre, release date and subscriber ratings. The movies don't have professional reviews and a few that we selected did not have a synopsis.

DVD Avenue doesn't have as many search capabilities as other online rental services; however searching by title, synopsis, actor and director as well as browsing by genre, actor, director, year and language is enough to find what you're looking for.

With four different membership plans to choose from and some of the most in-depth search capabilities we've seen, we feel that DVD Avenue is a good online DVD rental service. But they only have half the movie selection that is available through our top picks, Netflix and Blockbuster Online.

Video Game Rentals Delivered

GameFly, is the first and most well-known video game rental service on the Internet. GameFly has more than 6000 games on nine major gaming consoles including the largest selection on seventh generation consoles like Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3. They also rent PSP movies.

Individual games include descriptions, reviews, cheats, screenshots and videos. You can also purchase many games at a discounted price. GameFly offers a free trial membership, 2-4 day shipping times and parental controls for anxious parents. GameFly also offers a quick return option, enabling users to have their next game shipped before it is officially returned to the distribution center, allowing for quicker turnover times. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better online video game rental service.

GameFly features some of the most comprehensive game pages in the industry. Each GameFly description page includes, where available, a game summary, rating, user reviews, critic reviews, screenshots, videos, cheats, instructions, specs and additional game suggestions. The instructions and cheats are particularly helpful. GameFly will also display a game's rental availability and used purchase price.

GameFly doesn't charge late fees or impose due dates as long as your membership is active. You also won't pay shipping fees. As soon as you are finished with your video game, you seal it up in the prepaid envelope and drop it in the mailbox. You can cancel your membership at any time.

If you really like a game, you can choose to purchase it at GameFly's used price. GameFly also offers parental controls so parents can restrict their children's access to video games with suggestive or inappropriate content.

Parents (credit card holders) can block the rental of games based on ESRB rating. They can also block the rental of PSP movies based on MPAA rating. When the parental control feature is activated, the system blocks the addition of restricted games and movies to the account's Game Q andthe ability to read restricted game's user reviews. A password is required to change or alter the account settings and purchase games.

The GameFly Pre-Played Store is full of discounted games from all major platforms. All games are guaranteed to be scratch free and in perfect working condition. They are also mailed with the original case and manual. You don’t need to have a GameFly membership to purchase used games, but you will have to set up a partial account with a login and password.

If you have an account and like a rented game so much you would like to buy it, you can simply keep it. You just select the “Keep it” button located on your GameFly account management screen and your credit card is automatically charged from there.

GameFly also offers a few incentive programs including GameFly Rewards and referral rewards. With GameFly Rewards, the longer you are an active member, the more rewards you earn. You could earn up to 10% off used game purchases and 5 GameFly dollars for every three months you are a member. GameFly dollars can be used toward the purchase of used games. However, GameFly reward dollars will expire 90 days after being issued.

With the referral program, you can earn $20 for every friend you have sign up for a GameFly membership.

One of GameFly's most unique features is their partnership with Facebook and GamePie. GamePie is an application users can apply to their Facebook profiles that is designed to build a community of gamers by allowing users to review and rate games, share what you are playing now, what you’ve played in the past and create a wish list of games you’d like to play in the future. It’s a fun little app that gets you and your friends involved in gaming. However, since it is not a direct initiative of GameFly, there is no direct integration into your GameFly account. In the future, we'd like to see the ability to display your Q and recently purchased games to your friends.

GameFly has more than 6000 video game titles for all major consoles like Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube. They also have one of the largest selections of games for the newest platforms including PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. There seems to be a fair selection of titles across the board. Each platform includes numerous pages of games and every search category includes multiple game options.

GameFly also carries selections for all major hand held systems like Nintendo DS, GameBoy Advanced and PlayStation PSP. GameFly also sells and rents PSP movies.

GameFly allows you to find the right video games easily. You select your platform from a tool bar at the top of the page. From there, you can narrow or organize your search by genre, popularity, release date, community rating or a game's online capabilities. You can also search by specific titles using the search bar always located in the upper right corner of your screen.

GameFly has four distribution centers located in each corner of the U.S. Locations include Los Angeles, CA; Pittsburgh, PA; Tampa, FL and Austin, TX. You can expect to receive your games about two to four days after placing them in your Q.

One of our favorite features is that GameFly has teamed up with the U.S. Postal service to make delivery and turnover easier than any other service. As soon as your game's barcode is scanned by the USPS, GameFly sends out the next game in your Q before your old game has officially reached their warehouse.
